Let’s accept it- Arts as a discipline in higher studies remains the most disregarded. Yes, there are reasons, and some legitimate ones. The modern world seeks more and more engineers to build great structures and highways, and the rest of the demand comes for doctors, advocates and financial experts. Consumerism has preferred newer inventions, from cars to home theatres and this has sidelined professions related to the arts discipline. With time, even this discipline widened its scope to encompass politics and language; the core, which is drawing, painting and sculpting (recognized as fine arts), lost much of its sheen.

Let’s get straight to the point. The painting, Salvator Mundi, of arguably the world’s best ever painter, Leonardo da Vinci, sold for a whopping USD 450 million at an auction in New York. If you believe that the legacy of this painter is unmatched, quite true since he was a man of immense talent, there are still some names from the contemporary world who earned both fame and money with their artistic ability. One such name is Indian painter, M. F. Hussain, whose works command great influence.

Has arts been totally shunned?

No, there are still some takers. Manav Gupta, SudarsanPattnaik and Anjolie Ela Menon are some of India’s leading contemporary painters who have left an indelible mark with their works. Sadly, their names and success stories are confined to a limited audience and not much about them is covered by mainstream media. Still, the success that they and many others have attained is no way inferior to those who chose medicine or engineering as their occupation.

Should you or should you not?

This can be best answered by you. And if like many, you are confused whether or not to place a bet on arts, read about pioneers in the field, including Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso. If you get immersed into the magnificence of their body of work, yes you may be the taker. This aside, one must also be endowed with natural flair for drawing and painting to embark on the path that may eventually lead to international recognition as well as financial rewards.

Indeed, not many would be appreciative of your choice of arts discipline and with painting as your major almost everyone could dishearten you. But look at it the other way. The world today is short of talented painters but the demand for a great piece of drawing hasn’t weakened. It’s just that the glorification of other disciplines has given a body blow to fine arts.

If yes, then how?

College of Art (University of Delhi) and Banaras Hindu University are among institutes that run bachelor programmes in fine arts. One can also enroll in a private university to pursue the field. Freelance artists regularly exhibit their work in metro cities; getting in touch with them can ease the pain for new entrants in this discipline. So, if you believe you have that depth in your understanding that can create a great piece of artwork, we unmistakably recommend you to pursue the dream.
