The country is mourning its brave security personnel who laid their lives in the service of the motherland on 14th of February 2019. The suicide attack on the CRPF convoy in Pulwama is being widely condemned at every possible platform, including the social media. For civilians, who have already made their careers in regular noncombatant jobs, yes, there may be no other way to vent the deep-rooted anger. But for the youth of India, who are yet to decide on their dream job, there is an option- joining the defence forces, and in that manner paying a true tribute to the martyred.

The Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard regularly invite applications from aspirants willing to defend the country against internal and external threats, including cross-border terrorism and left-wing militancy. Here’s how you can be a part of the armed forces, which fall under the management of India’s Defence Ministry.

The Union Public Service Commission, popularly known as UPSC, conducts various competitive exams to recruit commissioned officers. For National Defence Academy and Naval Defence Academy, these are held by the commission twice in a year and school pass-outs or those appearing in intermediate can apply. Similarly, university grads can go for Combined Defence Service Examination, where the gates for Indian Military Academy, Air Force Academy and Naval Academy are thrown open to successful aspirants. Technical recruitments are generally held through the Short Service Commission (Technical) Entry Scheme.

Besides, there are multiple career options in Indian paramilitary forces, which need a comparable commitment as expected out of one joining the armed forces, but the service conditions vary. These come under the Ministry of Home Affairs and include Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Indo Tibetan Border Police and Sashastra Seema Bal. Assam Rifles and National Security Guard can also be an option, and one needs to visit their respective website for submitting application.

Although all jobs add to the socio-economic development of the country, the risks and prestige involved in defence jobs are unmatched. Yes, it takes immense courage and an unrelenting resolve to be a part, once you are in, you are destined for glory. The respect that a defence job can draw is unlike in any other, and the content of having served the motherland is supreme.

Time is now. Although not all competing for a place in defence can make it, there’s no denying the fact that all those attempting to find a place have patriotism and undying love for country deep in their hearts. Yes, India, unlike many other countries including Israel and Thailand, does not have a compulsory enlistment of people in national service, known technically as conscription, there is no scarcity of those willing to be a part voluntarily. For you too, it may be the apt time to rise above the social media-based patriotism and display the genuine valor. Let Pulwama’s heroes sacrifice count.
