This is a complex problem, complex since the contemporary world and its educational institutions, mainly business schools, along with all the lustrous media hype of startups, have made one to believe that being a businessman or a businesswoman is no different than being a more revered expression, ‘Entrepreneur’. Is it so? Is there no differentiation that lies between being a businessperson and being an entrepreneur? Let’s boil down to some basic concepts.

Before that, tighten your seat belts as the ride may be bumpy, you are liable to feel a little low in case you fall in the category that doesn’t distinguish you as an entrepreneur; the silver lining, however, is that with all uncomplicatedly acquirable assets, you attain that differentiation. So, let’s embark on the journey.

In a market where vendors are selling a particular item, an addition to the list of vendors will mean that a new enterprise has come up and competition has heightened. Who is that new vendor – a shopkeeper, a businessperson, a capitalist or an entrepreneur? These may all seem synonyms of one another. Let us now define these in the present world scenario.

The market dem ands innovations, we all know about prevailing downtrend, job cuts, dipping manufacturing output and a slower rate of growth in services. In this scene, let us take two men, of whom one becomes a stationary vendor on a street that is already overwhelmed with similar merchants. The other chooses to come up with the idea of improving the efficiency of the pen in terms of how long can the ink last and also adds a feature of being spill-proof to the pen, something new for that market.

It is now easier to distinguish between a businessperson and an entrepreneur. You got it right. The first person is undeniably a businessperson or a shopkeeper to be precise; the second, who is she? Isn’t she revolutionizing the market, isn’t she introducing concepts that were never thought of, or if thought of, were never worked on? Isn’t her entry in the market a game changer?

Then get to the fundamentals and check the uniqueness of your idea, check if there is some feature that can make your idea groundbreaking, a game changer; once done, you are ready to be that ‘entrepreneur’ we all want.

Do not go with the wind; take the wind where you go!
