Today, let’s talk of some professions that may have great demand in the future in India owing to the rapid changes in technology and more importantly the fact that these industries or professions are still at a very nascent stage in India and thus hold a great scope for growth in future.
The signs are all there. One no longer needs an insurance agent to buy a policy since online insurance aggregators, together with advances in internet services, are saving both money and time. And hence, the marketer is gone. We are sure almost every one of you has tried hands on one or the other e-commerce websites and order stuff online. And hence, the brick and mortar trader is gone. Now let’s also talk of some of the elite professions that may not remain so elite in near future; medical professionals for instance. Online websites are helping diagnosis of illnesses through artificial intelligence and are giving an interactive platform to cure-seekers and doctors. Arguably, the most-sought after job today is the job of an IT engineer. One not only draws high salary in this profession, there are chances to move to foreign countries where clients are based. India is the software capital of the world they say, but for how many more years?
By the time the present generation is ready to pick any one discipline and study it in order to be a skilled and employable, many things would have changed. It’s just a matter of time when the fossil-fuel based vehicles will be replaced by battery-operated cars and two-wheelers. The world is fighting climate change and it won’t be long that there will be demand for climate change engineers. Companies including Uber and Tesla are testing driverless vehicles and who knows the first car the students of today purchase out of their own salary is a self-driven one.
Let’s have a look at some of the jobs of future.
1. 3D Printing technicians
3D printing is one such area. What does it mean? It can be understood as a machine capable of producing an object without having to resort to any manual intervention whatsoever. Yes, multiple layers eventually produce a 3-dimensional object and this is all done by a machine without any manual labour such as hammering or pressing. 3D printers haven’t made their way in a decisive manner in India but it won’t be long that traditional manufacturing processes will be replaced by this technology. And hence the need of engineers who can develop 3D printing machines and other essentials such as the software on which it runs and of course, skilled people who can operate 3D printers.
2. Drone Operators
We know you have heard about drones. But not just as a fun object, drones have multiple other uses, one of which is in defence and security. Application ranges from mapping and surveying using drones and their use in agriculture for spraying to delivery of goods and surveillance of critical infrastructure using unmanned aerial devices. The drones are more sophisticated as one thinks and this is why drone operators, besides drone engineers will be in great demand in future.
3.Defence Engineers
Defence engineering is another space that will see a surge in demand of skilled talent. Countries across the globe are acquiring more and more weapons in order to strengthen their national security and this is why production of defence equipment such as military communication devices and combat tools will see an uptick. Rarely do students think of being a submarine or an aircraft carrier engineer, but the world at large needs them, especially India, the country that faces continuous threat from neighbours, China and Pakistan.
4.Climate Engineers
Next are climate engineers. Although countries are trying hard to contain greenhouse gases and other toxicants, much of the damage has already been done. We surely need people who can reverse climate change and global warming with new-age innovation. And hence, the world and our country that usually has the most polluted cities in the world need climate engineers.Climate engineers will advance the fight against climate change and they can deliver on various counts including preservation of glaciers and carbon sequestration.
5.Biomedical Engineers
When engineers use their skills for application to the fields of healthcare and medicine, they are typically referred to as biomedical engineers. And yes, they are set to be in great demand given the strides in technology that is revolutionizing healthcare. New-age solutions are being increasingly implemented in the field of medicine and this includes artificial internal organs and equipment that can diagnose medical issues without human intervention. From developing these solutions to putting them in use, biomedical engineers have the key role to play.
The above list is in no way exhaustive. But the point is that the world is changing and so is the types of jobs. The present generation of students needs to research and identify professions that will be of relevance when they start their career i.e. based on future. Indeed, what one wants to pursue in life should always be an independent decision. All the above-mentioned spaces are promising in the near future and hence, they may be considered if they interest you.
