Politics is complicated, more so for the millennials who are yet to understand the complexities of power structure and governance models. People in America vote directly in the Presidential elections, while in India, voters elect their representatives to the Indian Parliament and the political party with majority in the lower house decides the Prime Minister to lead the team. Sounds complex? It may when you are still in school or have enrolled in an undergraduate course in a college.
But lately, you must all have noticed the word ‘democracy’ being discussed vigorously on different platforms.And since ateenager is now much more connected to the outside world, thanks to the internet having reached even the most remote regions of the country, you are sure to confront a conversation on the subject.
A new wave in politics, especially after Donald Trump having won the Presidential polls in the US, has started debates on ‘threats to democracy and democratic institutions’. But let us not make it this complicated in this article and stick to the basics. For a layman, democracy can be understood as a system of government where people are entitled to vote in elections and elect their favorite candidate. Simply stated- ‘a government of the people, by the people and for the people’, or even simpler- the class monitor appointed not by the teacher but elected by students through direct voting.
And yes, as a millennial, one must be aware of what democracy and its virtues mean. They mean that those who have the right to make and amend country’s laws come from within us and we have the crucial right to choose them, all one needs is inclusion in the voters’ list, which solely comes with attainment of the age of majority that is 18 years. Your religion, caste, gender, social or financial status have nothing to do with your right to vote, and this right is inviolable.
Interesting, isn’t it? So gone are the days when kings passed on the power to their kin and no more can an undeserving, unwise representative fool us for long since he/she must face re-election after a fixed period of time. Since attaining independence from the British Raj, we have been a democratic nation with universal suffrage, and remarkably, we are the largest democracy in the world. This brings with it accountability and the beneficiaries are all of us. Our elected representatives pay heed to our needs and grievances, and the socio-economic landscape shapes in a manner we want it to.
As a student, you may want to build a career in computer science, aeronautics, medicine or robotics, still being aware of the meaning and power of democracy is a must. This will develop within you a sense of pride and belongingness to the country. A youth who is aware of his/her rights thrives in an otherwise complicated and competitive world.
So from now on, don’t shy away from conversations on democracy; instead make sure you voice your opinion since it will count. In the end, it’s you who holds the ultimate power, and that’s the beauty of being a native of a democratic country.
