Who says burdens bother only in the later stages of life? And even if one does say so, is thatperson right? Indeed, responsibilities sharply increase with age but prudent decision making is a trait that a person must own and exhibit much earlier in life. From striking a balance between curricular and extra-curricular activities to being conscious of new developments in the field of education, a school going child has to manage much more than what appears on its face.

Indian education system isn’t still as advanced as that of Germany’s or other western countries. Since long, students have been expected to select any one of the streams after high school, and this choice, most often than not, decides how the child fares in the later stages of life- as a breadwinner for family, as a contributor to society and economy and as a post-superannuation pensioner. So, for a teenage boy or girl, as young as 16 years old, life brings its first major challenge and one is expected to face it astutely.

As the saying goes, and what has been popularized by such Indian movies as 3 Idiots, most families expect their child to pursue engineering or medicine; hence go with the science discipline. Most of you would have experienced or will experience a situation where opting for science stream in Grade 11 appears a far more promising option than going for commerce or arts. But is that so in reality?

Let’s have a fact check. Many opting for commerce do make promising careers in the fields of accountancy, statisticsand economics, for example, a chartered accountant or an investment banker or an economist or a statistician is in no way less reputed a professional as against an engineer or a doctor.

For those opting arts, the prospects aren’t as bleak as they are projected in the mainstream. Many of those securing top positions in civil service exams come from arts background (a recent topper was a graduate in political science from Delhi University). And we all know that an IAS job brings with it far more standing than any other job in India. Arts discipline also produces great writers, novelists and even politicians. Why then consider this stream less coveted than others?

Having noted that one can flourish in any stream- science, arts or commerce- you still must not go by what is said in the above paragraphs. You are the one who understands you more than anyone else does. You are the one who will live the life, either as a doctor, an engineer, a chartered accountant, a statistician, a writer or for that matter a professional photographer, actor or talk show host. Yes, Oprah Winfrey is one of the richest celebrities in the world, all owing to her long and successful stint as a talk show host. She did what she thought she could do best and shethrived beyond expectations.

So finally, ask yourself what you want to be, what interests you, what motivates you and what inspires you the most. You hold the key to your success, the stream- science, arts or commerce- doesn’t matter.
